In this short, 2 part course, Nurve shows us how to approach Subtractive EQ in the most simplest of ways possible. Subtractive EQ is used by almost every music producer knowing, and unknowingly, across all genres of music. Subtractive EQ can be used to balance sounds to give them more of a cohesive overall sound, it can be used to help sounds gel with other elements in the mix and some might even say it can also be used a very light form of compression which can in turn, deter you from using compression at all on certain sounds. It is a bold statement but Nurve does have a very open mind and isn’t scared to voice his opinion. Please note that this tutorial isn’t designed to turn you against compression, as Nurve explains. He in fact uses a combination of both Subtractive EQ and Compression in his production and he believes that both of these tools are very important parts in achieving the best out of his music production whether it be compositions or mastering.
In overview: Subtractive EQ is an EQ technique that allows you to cut frequencies as opposed to boosting them to let specific frequencies/fundamental notes of a sound stand out better in the mix and in turn, can help other frequencies/fundamental sounds fall back into the mix. It is obviously the opposite to additive EQ. If you would like to see a full comprehensive guide on EQ by our other tutor, Special Circumstances, then head over here. His 7 part course really lifts the lid on all the different types of EQ and how, why and when to apply them.
