Ever thought about making a drum rack out of found sound, a bassline out of bees humming, or subs and wobbles out of vocal tones? Ekula presents 30 minutes on working with audio from outside of your D.A.W., covering all of the above and more.
Starting with a brief introduction to what makes up “out-of-the-box” production, alongside the history of field-recordings and found sound, Ekula splits the course into three main topics: Vocal Recordings; Found Sounds, Foley and Field-Recordings, and; Repurposing Hardware. This broad overview covers a range of techniques to show just how much potential is out there beyond the confines of a D.A.W.
The Vocal Recordings video looks at ways you can include breath and vocal tones for atmospheric layers, before focusing on resampling all kinds of vocal noises to create straight subs, bendy subs and wobbles which can be a lot of fun to experiment with.
The second video, Found Sounds, Foley and Field Recordings, shows how to make an entire drum rack and risers (and Future-Garage-esque beat) out of skateboard sounds, accompanied by a bassline made from bees.
The final video, Repurposing Hardware, focuses on re-sampling glitches and bizarre LFO/Delay tails from one of the best and weirdest new guitar pedals on the market, the Fideleater by Intensive Care Audio.
Get yourself stuck in, get weirded-out by the course content and then lose yourself for hours giving similar techniques a go – this one is going to be a lot of fun.
